SURRY COUNTY, N.C. -- A man arrested in Surry County is now facing a murder charge out of Ohio following his confession, according to the Surry County Sheriff's Office.

On Sunday at 11 p.m., Surry County deputies responded to 6694 W. Pine St. in Lowgap after receiving a call from a man who said he had "done something bad."

While en route to the location, a second call was received from the same address. This time, a female caller stated that Bradley Gilbert was the original caller.

The female caller said that Gilbert had been drinking heavily and brandishing a firearm while making threats to others in the residence. The woman also said that Gilbert had left the residence and was no longer armed with the firearm but had instead armed himself with a machete.

When officers arrived at the scene, they located Gilbert across the road from 6694 W. Pine St., behind a guard rail, armed with a machete.

Officers confronted Gilbert and convinced him to relinquish the weapon.

Gilbert was taken into custody and taken to Northern Hospital of Surry County for a mental evaluation pursuant to involuntary commitment papers issued by the officers, the sheriff’s office said.

While interviewing those who witnessed Gilbert’s actions, deputies learned that Gilbert had made statements to others at the home that he had killed a man in Ohio shortly before coming to North Carolina on Oct. 11.

An investigation by deputies at the scene led them to contact Ohio officials who confirmed a missing person report that contained information consistent with evidence officers collected at the scene.

After Gilbert was released from Northern Hospital of Surry County on Monday, deputies placed him under arrest for resisting a public officer during the incident the previous evening.

After his arrest, Gilbert was interviewed by detectives from the Surry County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said that during the interview Gilbert admitted that he had killed a man in Montpelier, Ohio, and that his body could be found on a remote walking trail.

Detectives contacted local law enforcement in Ohio. Ohio officers conducted a search of the area described by Gilbert and located the body of a male.

Gilbert, 22, of Montpelier, Ohio, is currently confined in the Surry County Detention Center. He is charged with one count of resisting a public officer from the original encounter with Surry County deputies and one count of aggravated murder in Ohio.
