CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A North Carolina mother pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter on Wednesday in the drowning death of her 4-year-old son, according to WBTV.

Kelli Elizabeth Ledford, 32, was given a 16-29 month active sentence. Her husband is currently serving a 19-32 month sentence in connection to the drowning.

Officials told WBTV that negligent supervision by both parents led to the drowning.

“I have been in that cell a long time. I deal with this every day, every single day,” Ledford said in court. “I could have put a jacket on him while they were playing. This has been hard on my family and so hard on me. Please have mercy on me.”

Ledford’s son, Logan Putnam, fell into the water while playing near a dock with his two siblings at Lookout Shoals Lake. None of the children had on floatation devices and both parents had an obstructed view of them.

Putnam’s brother found him after he’d been underwater for 15 minutes.

The 4-year-old died from severe brain damage at Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem.
