SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — A gun was located in a student’s book bag on a Surry County school bus Thursday afternoon, according to Surry County Schools.

On Thursday afternoon, the principal of Cedar Ridge Elementary School received information that a handgun was located in a book bag on a school bus, the school system said.

Upon investigation, a .22 caliber handgun was confiscated from a student’s book bag by school personnel.

The gun was not loaded and no bullets were found, the school system said.

“With the assistance of Sheriff Graham Atkinson and the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, the situation was handled efficiently and appropriately,” the school system said in a news release.

Due to the age of the student involved, the school system is not releasing any additional information.
