What was initially believed to be a sprained left knee has become much worse for Panthers wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin.

NFL.com reports that Benjamin will need surgery for a torn ACL.

The team confirmed Benjamin will miss the 2015 season.

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said initially the team believed his injury was only a sprain.

Last season, Benjamin was targeted 146 times with 73 receptions for 1,008 yards.
