HOKE COUNTY, N.C. — Three family members were killed Monday in a two-vehicle crash after one of the drivers crossed the center line and caused a head-on collision, the Fayetteville Observer reported.

Matthew Allen English, 31, of Pinehurst, has been charged with careless and reckless driving, traveling left of the center line and driving while impaired.

He is in jail under a $10,000 bond.

Authorities said English was likely impaired by drugs, not alcohol, when the wreck occurred.

English was not seriously injured.

In the other vehicle, the driver and two of his three passengers died. They were James Douglas Wellington, 65, of Lumberton; John Wellington, 84, of Lumberton; and Joyce Wellington, 69. John and Joyce Wellington were married, and John Wellington was James Wellington’s father.

A third passenger, Gail Prescott, 55, of Lumberton, was listed in stable condition.
