ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. -- Construction started this week on the distribution center for the German grocery store LIDL, expected to bring hundreds of jobs to Alamance County.

The distribution center is expected to bring about 200 jobs to the area.

The project is part of a joint effort between Mebane, Graham and Alamance County to create the NC Commerce Park -- a business park being built on a 1,200-acre lot.

Along with LIDL, construction has also started on the new Wal-Mart distribution center next door, expected to create about 400 jobs.

Water and sewer lines have already been added to the area.

The state Department of Transportation is expected to start making road improvements to the site being built along Interstate 85.

Construction on the LIDL distribution center is expected to be finished by September 2016.

Officials do not know when the center will be open or when hiring will begin.
