DURHAM, N.C. — The remains of a previously unknown shipwreck possibly dating back to the American Revolution have been found more than a mile deep off the North Carolina coast.
Duke Today reported that an expedition led by a Duke marine scientist found the wreck on July 12 using an underwater robot and a manned submarine.
They spotted the wreck while using robotic autonomous underwater vehicle Sentry and the manned submersible Alvin. The team had been searching for a mooring that was deployed on a previous research trip in the area in 2012.
