Winston-Salem police officer charged in May crash that killed man

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A Winston-Salem police officer has been charged in a May crash that killed a 68-year-old man.

According to Forsyth County District Attorney James O’Neill, Sgt. John William Leone Jr., 47, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

The crash happened on May 13 at about 10 p.m. at the intersection of Reynolda and Polo roads.

Leone’s police cruiser collided with a pickup driven by Alan Edward Dunnagan, 68, of Winston-Salem.

Dunnagan was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and died on May 23.

Leone suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Leone has a preliminary court date of July 29.
