GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A new family shelter is opening weeks earlier than expected due to a growing need of people with small children but no place to stay.

The YWCA on East Wendover Avenue opened Wednesday on a limited basis for families who have been either living on the street or in their cars.

The shelter was scheduled to open on July 20.

Organizers say the demand was too high to wait and that the shelter is already at more than half its capacity with 15 children and 5 adults.

The shelter will officially open on July 13.

CEO Lindy Garnette says they were able to open earlier by reaching out to local churches who donated bedding, towels and other items.
