ELON, N.C. -- Two people were found dead inside an Elon home on Thursday in an apparent murder-suicide, according to Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson.

“At about 4:50 p.m. our central communications received a call from a male that said he had just shot his wife and was getting ready to turn the gun on himself," Johnson said.

When no one answered the door at the home on Walker Road, deputies called in the SWAT team.

"Inside [the SWAT team] found two bodies laying in the bed, one shot in the head and one dead ... still had the gun in his hand,” Johnson said.

The sheriff confirmed deputies had been called to the come before but would not comment. Neighbors say deputies were called for noise and gunfire.

The family of the deceased identified them as Kevin and Cathy Simmons.

The family said Kevin Simmons had been depressed as a result of recent business issues.

Cathy Simmons' parents last visited the couple at noon Thursday, saying, "The were still in the bed tired."

“He was nice man, his wife was a nice women; they never bothered anybody,” said neighbor Lillian Wilson. “They stayed home … don’t know what happen.”

An investigation is ongoing.
