Shark attacks girl off North Carolina coast; girl loses part of arm

Update: Another boy was attacked by a shark in Brunswick County later in the day.

OAK ISLAND, N.C. – A teenage girl was attacked by a shark off the North Carolina coast and lost part of her arm and could lose a leg, according to WECT.

It happened Sunday afternoon in Oak Island, according to Oak Island Mayor Betty Wallace. The victim was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

The teen victim lost part of her arm and could lose her left leg, according to the mayor. Her identity has not been released.

Multiple agencies responded to the incident. The victim was said to have been visiting family.

This is the second such incident in Brunswick County within a week. A 13-year-old girl was bitten while boogie boarding off Ocean Isle Beach on Thursday.

In that incident, the victim suffered non-life threatening injuries, but the shark took bites of her boogie board.
