BURLINGTON, N.C. — A man died early Wednesday morning and another was injured after an argument at a Burlington store ended in a shooting, Assistant Police Chief Chris Verdeck said.

Burlington police responded at 3:24 a.m. to the shooting at the CV Mart, 1846 N. Church St. While on the scene of an unrelated call on South Beaumont Avenue, police heard several gunshots in the area of North Church Street near Graham-Hopedale Road.

Officers responded to the area of the gunfire and observed several vehicles leaving the area at a high rate of speed. They conducted a traffic stop on one of the vehicles and confirmed a victim of a shooting was a passenger inside the stopped vehicle.

That passenger, James T. Withers, 24, of Mebane was taken to Alamance Regional Medical Center (ARMC) from the scene of the traffic stop. He was later transferred to UNC-CH Hospital. Withers is currently listed as being in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the leg.

A short time later the Burlington Police Department was notified by staff at ARMC that a second gunshot victim had arrived at that facility by private vehicle. That victim, Willie Thompson, Jr., 26 of Burlington, was pronounced dead upon arrival with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The investigation has revealed that an altercation had occurred at the CV Mart between Thompson, Withers and other unknown persons with gunshots being fired.

At this time there is no known suspect information and it is unknown if there are other victims. The motive of the shootings and relationships of all involved are unknown.

The investigation is ongoing.
