HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Early Friday morning, High Point University sophomore Mario Mayorga was killed after he was hit by a truck while walking along Business 85.
Surveillance video obtained by FOX8 helps explain what happened in the time surrounding his death.
The video shows a taxi from Blue Bird Taxi pull into an Exxon gas station off of Vickrey Chapel Road.
Blue Bird taxi manager Larry Newcomb explained that one of the company's drivers picked up Mayorga in downtown Greensboro and attempted to take him to HPU, but Mayorga repeatedly tried to exit the vehicle while it was on Business 85. So, the driver pulled into the Exxon station, where Newcomb said Mayorga got out of the car to throw up and refused to get back in.
"She tried her best to get him back in the cab but she said he was just too intoxicated and wouldn't get back in the cab," Newcomb said.
Surveillance video shows the taxi leaving the Exxon about five minutes later. The video clearly shows the taxi but neither Mayorga nor the taxi driver are seen.
Newcomb said the driver called dispatch and told them Mayorga would not get back in the cab and also called police to let them know.
State Troopers are still investigating. Right now neither the driver that hit Mayorga nor the taxi driver is facing charges.
