WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Bob Crawford’s first MerleFest was memorable.
It was the mid-1990s, years before the New Jersey-born bass player would connect with a couple of brothers by the last name of Avett and about a decade before he would join them on stage at Northwest North Carolina’s famed, four-day music festival.
“I was living in New Jersey,” Crawford said, thinking back to what would become four fateful days. “My buddy drug me down … he said, ‘You’ve gotta go to this festival in North Carolina.’ It was 1993 or ’94.
Now, Crawford is heading back to MerleFest this weekend. He’ll be taking the festival’s biggest stage Saturday night with the Avett Brothers, one of America’s biggest folk-rock bands.
