SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — One person is dead after a domestic dispute in Surry County.

On Thursday at 9:58 p.m. deputies responded to a call about a domestic dispute at 260 Mt. Pleasant Church Road.

The woman living at 260 Mt. Pleasant Church Road told deputies she and Jeremy Matthew Darnell, 37, of 382 Liberty School Road, had broken up Thursday evening. She took him back to his Liberty School Road address and returned home.

Darnell then returned to the woman’s home on Mt. Pleasant Church Road and that is when police received a call about a domestic dispute.

The woman said Darnell left after police were dispatched.

As deputies looked for Darnell, another call came in about 11:30 p.m. about a shooting at the same address.

The woman told deputies she called her ex-husband, James Burton, 33, because she was scared Darnell would come back.

When Darnell came back and tried to force his way into the woman’s home Burton shot him with one round from a .22 revolver through the storm door.

After being shot in the chest Darnell went down the road before being located by deputies on the corner of Mount Pleasant Road and Mount Pleasant Church Road in the State Road community.

Darnell was taken to Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin where he later died.

No charges have been filed against Burton. The district attorney is waiting for autopsy and toxicology reports to decide if any charges will be filed.

Burton and the female resident’s two children, ages 8 and 5, were home at the time of the shooting.
