GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Starting Monday the N.C. Department of Transportation will begin replacing a bridge that was built more than 60 years ago.
Crews have already posted detour signs to warn drivers that the half-mile stretch of Groometown Road between Hickory Creek Road and Wall Road will be closed until August.
Drivers will need to use a four-mile detour along Hickory Creek Road and Kivett Drive to get around the construction.
NCDOT officials said the bridge needs to be replaced to keep up with growing traffic demands on this road.
The new bridge will be able to accommodate all traffic including trucks and emergency vehicles. In addition, it won't have weight restrictions like the current bridge.
Work on the bridge should wrap up by Aug. 7, but in the meantime the detour is in place.
