GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The latest proposal from a developer interested in property on Friendly Avenue and Hobbs Road has people talking. It would include businesses, 3-story townhomes and 1.5-story single family homes.
For years, developers have been interested in buying and expanding on the site. The property is located near many other businesses. Interested developers have been asking to tear down residential communities in order to build up on the land.
Before that can happen, the City of Greensboro has to approve it.
City leaders say this is at least the fourth plan to be presented to the city for development projects on that property.
Residents, if displaced, would be compensated.
This latest plan, proposed by Halpern Enterprises, Inc., suggest building both businesses and homes on the property. The company is asking the Greensboro zoning commission to change the current zoning on the property from residential, to both residential and commercial.
The zoning commission is expected to either approve or deny the proposal set forth by the development company on April 13. If the commission approves it, the final decision will be made by the Greensboro City Council.
For years there has been opposition from residents who will end up living near the proposed site. Many of them saying they want the community to stay residential and don’t want it rezoned.
