NEW YORK — Prosecutors say an elderly man bashed his sick wife in the head with a hammer as she lay in a Queens hospital because he “didn’t want her to suffer.”

The Queens District Attorney and police say 87-year-old Manuel Besteiro brought a hammer into Elmhurst Hospital March 7. An eyewitness says she saw Besteiro hit his 83-year-old wife — who was in the hospital to get surgery — in the head with the hammer.

The woman had to receive 20 staples to the right side of her head as result of the beating.

After the attack, Besteiro told authorities, “I went to see my wife in the hospital. The staff told me she was going to have surgery.” He added, “I didn’t want to see her suffer, so I hit her in the head with a hammer.”

Besteiro has been charged with felony assault and criminal possession of a weapon. He has been arranged and has since been released. DNAinfo reports a temporary order of protection has been issued.
