WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Allison Brower, an eighth-grader at Pine Lake Preparatory in Mooresville, was the last speller standing on Sunday in the 75th annual Winston-Salem Journal Regional Spelling Bee.

The regional bee was sponsored by the Winston-Salem Journal and Truliant Federal Credit Union at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts.

Allison, representing the Western Regional (nonpublic) schools, won by correctly spelling “occasionally” in the 11th round. This was her first time competing in the regional bee.

As the champion, she will now advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May.
