4-month-old squeezed until ribs broke, parents charged
SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. — The parents of a 4-month-old baby have been charged with child abuse following what doctors discovered after an X-ray was taken.
According to WYFF, deputies were called to Spartanburg County Medical Center on Tuesday by a doctor who said a couple had brought their baby in with a fever and breathing problems.
The doctor said when the child’s chest was X-rayed it was determined that the baby had at least three broken ribs.
The couple, 18-year-old Kelsey Lynn Gates and 19-year-old Robert William Thompson, both initially lied about how the baby was injured.
Gates eventually confessed that Thompson had grabbed the baby “really hard around the chest” as the two were arguing a few weeks ago. She said the baby screamed abnormally hard, but that it didn’t last long so she thought the child was alright.
Thompson and Gates were both charged with abuse with great bodily injury.
The baby has been placed in protective custody.
