GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford College has angered some in the Jewish community by inviting a man labeled as anti-Semitic to speak on its campus Tuesday.

Steven Salaita, at the time a University of Illinois professor, tweeted a series of messages In 2014 that he called “passionate and unfiltered,” criticizing Israel’s decision to bomb Gaza.

His tweets cost him his lifetime tenure at the university a week before Salaita was to begin teaching there. University of Illinois donors threatened to pull their funding if the school kept him.

Max Carter, director of the Friends Center at Guilford College, said he has gotten backlash for inviting Salaita to campus. His department, along with the English and Gender Studies departments, is sponsoring the speech.
