WILKES COUNTY, N.C. — An activity bus from Elkin County Schools veered off the road and went down an embankment, hitting a tree just before noon Monday.

The students were returning from a field trip to Johnny Walker Center at Wilkes Community Center when the bus went down an embankment.

All of the children on the bus are safe and were able to exit from the rear door of the bus.

The driver, Gerald DeWan Moses, 73, of Elkin was charged with failure to maintain lane control. Moses was taken to Hugh Chatham Hospital with a hip injury.

Police said speed was not a factor in the accident but wind may have contributed.
