PILOT MOUNTAIN, N.C. -- Those who knew Christian Gage Edwards described him as an outgoing, popular guy who everybody liked.
Upon learning of his death Monday afternoon, his classmates at East Surry High School were devastated.
"A lot of people are just really down," East Surry student Andrew Zachman said. "That's kind of the atmosphere in the school now."
The 17-year-old high school junior passed away after spending two days in the hospital in critical condition. He was airlifted after getting in a single car wreck on Old Winston Road on Saturday.
"It really hits the community hard," Zachman said. "Because it’s such a small community."
Edwards was a star athlete at East Surry, where he played football, baseball and basketball.
Senior Parker Hale said Edwards was known and liked by everybody.
"It's a small school, about 600 people," he said. "Everyone kind of knows each other. Someone as popular as he is - he pretty much knows everyone. He was just full of school spirit. Lots of charisma."
School officials said he was actively involved in Young Life at his church, and was an organ donor.
