ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — A rest home employee in Alamance County is accused of assaulting an elderly woman in her care.

LaTonya Rena Smith, 36, of Reidsville, has been charged with one count of felonious patient abuse in connection to an injured 61-year-old woman.

The suspect had been an employee of D&M Family Care Home at 4327 Burch Bridge Road in Burlington.

Officials said the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office received a report Wednesday of abuse of a disabled adult from the Alamance County Department of Social Services Adult Protective Services.

A search warrant of the rest home was executed on Friday. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services served a notice of summary suspension of the adult care home license of D&M Family Care Home.

Alamance County authorities took the remaining residents in the home and placed them in other facilities, according to deputies.

Specific details about the allegations have not been released. Smith received an $80,000 secured bond.
