Car hits, critically injures woman in Asheboro

ASHEBORO, N.C. — A woman is in critical condition after being hit by a car in Asheboro.

Police said Sandra Kaye Garrison was injured after walking across N.C. 49 near Mack Road at about 6:25 a.m. Friday.

Debra Tate has been charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid colliding with a person. Officials say she was speeding at 50 mph in a 35-mph zone.

Tate also was charged with failure to maintain liability insurance. Her court date is set for April 1.

The victim was airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, according to police.
