TOPEKA, Kan. — Just a few months ago, 18-year-old Washburn University freshman Colton Christenson was speaking at his brother’s wedding.

Monday night, he lost his life while driving just blocks away from Washburn.

Topeka Police say Colton was in the driver seat of a white Pontiac when a passenger shot him, and the car crashed into the porch of the home at 1708 SW 15th. No one was injured inside the home.

Topeka Police identify the suspect, as 21-year-old Kelsey Lee Fairchild. Police said Fairchild was taken into custody on Tuesday.

Topeka Police say they do not know why the two were in the car together.

His sister in law Jordan Christenson posted this on Facebook: “Honestly numb right now. There are so many things I wish I could change and do different. Why do bad things happen to good people? Why are the good taken so young? Why you? I love you. Please wake me up and tell me this was a bad dream.”

Colton’s family has set up a memorial fund. You can donate at www.gofundme.com/ColtonChristenson.

They also set up an account at Envista Credit Union. You can mention his name at any location and donate.
