GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. – Senior Resources of Guilford will perform wellness checks during mobile meal deliveries to make sure seniors are staying warm.
Oscar Lowe is the Nutrition Director for Senior Resources of Guilford and said that about 350 seniors get hot meals daily through the program.
During the colder months, volunteers who deliver pay close attention to wellness checks to be sure seniors have access to heat.
"The wellness check, particularly when you start getting close to the inclement weather and things of that nature, it's kind of a little life line that they have," Lowe said. "Unfortunately too many of our people may not see anybody else that day but the volunteer."
Calls for senior services increase during the colder months, according to Bob Cleveland with Piedmont Triad Council.
Cleveland overseas three counties, including Guilford, and helps advocate and allot funds to support aging services like mobile meals.
The entire Piedmont Triad Council overseas 12 counties.
About $2 million from federal and state funds go toward senior services for Guilford County.
