WALKERTOWN, N.C. -- One man was shot and killed and another was assaulted during a home invasion late Wednesday evening in Walkertown.

Forsyth County Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene at a house in the 6000 block of Cain Forest Drive just before 11 p.m.

"I was watching TV and I heard two shots, and I was afraid to get up," said Mary Powell, who lives about a hundred feet away. "And then I realized it was across the street. And it scared me."

The man who was shot later died at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He was identified as Jimmy Michael Slate, 57, of Walnut Cove.

The other man suffered from blunt force trauma as a result of being assaulted.

"It could have been me instead of them," said Cathy Pennington, who lives next door to the scene. "Terrifying; I have a daughter, a teenage daughter. And that's scary."

The victims told deputies that the two suspects forced their way into the home and robbed them of their money.

Six adults and two children were inside the home during the invasion.

"We never had nothing like this before here," said Powell.

Both men were transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for medical treatment.

The assault victim suffered non-life threatening injuries and has been discharged from the hospital. He has not been identified.

Deputies are looking for the two suspects who fled in an unknown direction.

The suspects are described as two black males wearing dark clothing with facial coverings.
