Summerfield man arrested after shooting son following argument

SUMMERFIELD, N.C. — A man is in custody after allegedly shooting his son during an argument Wednesday night.

Jeffrey Lee Oakes, 52, of Summerfield, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

According to the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, Oakes shot his son, 23-year-old Josh Oakes, in the leg following an argument between the two around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Josh Oakes is being treated at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for his injury, which is considered non-life threatening.

Jeffrey Oakes was placed in the Rockingham County Jail under a $5,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 29.
