Son shot during altercation with NC councilman father

HARRISBURG, N.C. — The son of a Harrisburg town councilman was rushed to the hospital after police said he was shot during an altercation with his father at their home Sunday night.

Officers say 31-year-old Phillip Cowherd IV was shot when a gun went off during an altercation with his father, Town Councilman Phillip Cowherd III, around 6:30 p.m. at the home on Excalibur Court.

Officials did not disclose where Cowherd IV was shot, but said the injuries were not life-threatening.

Investigators said four or five other people were in the home at the time of the altercation and shooting. They did not say who fired the gun or if it was intentional.

Officials are investigating and will discuss with the case with the District Attorney to determine if there will be charges.
