GREENSBORO, N.C. -- We are 12 weeks away from Christmas. In an effort to help families in need this holiday season the Salvation Army has to start early.

"We know it's going to be a more expensive Christmas for us this year for sure," said Major Don Vick with the Greensboro Salvation Army, which started taking applications on Monday. Each year the Greensboro office takes in about 1,400 applications. "By the end of [Thursday] we've taken all the applications that we normal take this time of year."

The Greensboro office will still be able to refer families to other agencies in town.

The applications for Christmas assistance will be helped thanks to people who donate toys to FOX8 Gifts for Kids. Donations can be made at local Lowes Home Improvement stores from Nov. 14 through Dec. 9 and at the FOX8 studios in High Point through Dec. 15.‚Äč
