RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities said a 7-year-old child was shot in the buttocks after a group of children found a gun inside a backpack in the North Carolina woods.

WYFF reported that the child, two family members and a neighbor found a backpack in the woods with a gun inside Wednesday afternoon in Rutherford County.

Authorities said one of the children pulled the gun out, and the victim was accidentally shot in the buttocks.

The child was taken to Spartanburg Regional Hospital by emergency workers in Rutherford County, according to officials.

There is no word on who owned the gun, why it was in the woods or the extent of the child’s injuries.
