OAK ISLAND, N.C. — Dozens of dead sharks have been found washed ashore off the coast of North Carolina.

WECT-TV reported that the dead sharks were found washed ashore on a popular beach strand in Oak Island on Sunday morning.

The unidentified sharks ranged in size from about one to five feet, according to WECT-TV. A witness said he saw about 50 of them.

The sharks have since been picked up and removed from the beach strand, according to authorities.

The cause of the sharks’ death remains uncertain. The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries is investigating.

It is illegal to dump any species of dead fish on the public beach strand, according to Oak Island Mayor Betty Wallace.
