CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Police have issued a wanted poster and released the photo of Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr., a “person of interest” in the disappearance of 18-year-old University of Virginia student Hannah Graham.
Matthew, 32, is now also wanted for misdemeanor reckless driving.
“I believe Jesse Matthew was the last person she was seen with before she vanished off the face of the earth,” Charlottesville Police Tim Longo said Sunday. “It’s been a week and we can’t find her. It’s been a week and someone has got to know something.”
WTVR reported that Matthew walked into the police station and asked for a lawyer late Saturday afternoon. After talking with a lawyer, Matthew got into a vehicle and sped off.
Investigators followed the vehicle, but had to give up the pursuit because the vehicle was traveling too fast. Virginia State Police charged Matthew with two counts of reckless driving, and an arrest warrant was issued.
It was reported that investigators are “aggressively pursuing his location.”
Police said Matthew is the man referenced in surveillance video from Sal’s Restaurant that showed a man with dreadlocks first walking west bound on the mall. The video then showed the man cross the mall, and start walking behind Graham.
Matthew’s vehicle, a 1998 burnt orange Chrysler Coupe, was found along the mall and seized Friday morning. The department is awaiting test results from forensic evidence recovered from the car.
“Matthew has associates/contacts in Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington D.C., ” the wanted poster indicated. “If you have information as to his whereabouts please call the Charlottesville Police Department or the 24-hour tip line at 434-295-3851.”
