WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A man and his pregnant girlfriend were woken up by a fire in their apartment early Friday morning in Winston-Salem.

Crews responded to the fire around 4:40 a.m. at the Shattalon Trace Apartments on 5000 Eltha Drive.

Officials say the fire started in Apt. E on the upper level. The tenant said he felt heat on his arms and woke up to flames in his bedroom. His girlfriend, who is six weeks pregnant, was sleeping on the couch.

The couple then went door to door alerting other tenants. All tenants escaped without injury.

A neighboring unit sustained some damage, and the lower level units were damaged by water and heat.

There are no reports on the exact cause of the fire. An investigation is ongoing.
