UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A Union County mother says her teenage daughter was attacked on a bus earlier this week.

According to WBTV, Laurell Mungo says another student attacked her daughter, 15-year-old Shirdrea Covington, a developmentally disabled student at Wolf Developmental Center.

Shirdrea arrived home off the bus with a swollen knee and visible bruises on her body, the mother reported.

Mungo said a bus monitor told her that another child had wiggled out of the harness.

Details of what happened were not released, so Mungo says she asked to see surveillance video from inside the bus. She was told the camera wasn’t working.

Union County school district spokesperson released this statement:

“The safety of all students is a top priority in union county public schools. We are taking this matter very seriously. Due to an active investigation, we are not at liberty to share details about the students involved or the alleged incident.”
