Burlington man charged in fatal Haw River crash

HAW RIVER, N.C. — A Burlington man was been charged in in connection with a fatal head-on crash in Haw River on Tuesday.

According to the Burlington Times News, troopers say James Whitaker, 54, was charged Wednesday with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Whitaker, driving a 1979 Chevy truck carrying mulch on Stone Street Extension around 3:30 p.m., when he lost control and crossed the center line,hitting a Toyota Camry and nearly collided with another vehicle behind it before overturning in the road.

The Camry was being driven by Anibal Santos, 70, of Mebane.

Santos was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, Maria Santos, 67, and their 3-month-old granddaughter, Sarah Jones, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Maria Santos was treated at Alamance Regional Medical Center. The infant was transported to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Troopers do not believe that alcohol or speed were factors.
