Witness says they saw ejection, chute in Virginia fighter jet crash

ELLIOT KNOB, Va. — A plane that crashed Wednesday morning is an F-15c was from the 104th Fighter Wing out of Barnes Air National Guard Base, Westfield, Mass.  A witness told authorities that they saw an ejection from the jet and saw a chute, the News Leader is reporting.

It was a one-seater, and the pilot made a report of an inflight emergency prior to radio contact being lost.

The jet was en route to get a system upgrade.

The first call of the crash came in at 9:06 am.

Witnesses said they heard a loud boom saw a pillar of black smoke in the George Washington National Forest near the side of a mountain near Elliot Knob in Augusta County.

All routes to the area near Deerfield are currently closed.

“I’m on location, with smoke, and we do have debris,” a responder said on emergency radio frequencies at 10:04 a.m. “I got debris everywhere… I haven’t located anybody.”
