WADESBORO, N.C. — Fire officials in Anson County are crediting their school safety program with helping save a family in Wadesboro, according to WSOC-TV.

Officials said 11-year-old Mekhi Brooks and 15-year-old Rondell Thompson were at their home on Highway 52 last week cooking when a fire broke out.

Fire crews said the boys were able to turn the stove off and cover the pot before running from the home and calling 911.

The boys told firefighters the fire education program in school taught them how to safely escape.
