BOILING SPRING LAKES, N.C. — A young North Carolina couple’s brand new home was heavily damaged by a lightning strike on the same day they moved in.

WECT-TV reported that it happened Friday night to a couple in Boiling Spring Lakes.

Fire officials said the couple had just moved in that day and came home to the smell of smoke and a feeling of heat in the house.

The couple called 911 and when firefighters arrived, they found a fire in the attic area and smoke throughout the home, according to WECT-TV.

Firefighters had the situation under control in a matter of hours, but about 40 percent of the home is destroyed, according to officials. No injuries were reported.

Authorities said the fire was started after lightning hit the air handler. The fire reportedly started in the attic and spread to the kitchen.

The couple reportedly plans on staying with family until the home is repaired. They reportedly signed a lease earlier in the day.
