Officers negotiating with man who fired shots in air, locked self in residence in Stoneville

STONEVILLE, N.C. — Officers are responding to an incident at a Stoneville residence.

Officers were alerted to a subject allegedly firing shots into the air outside a residence in the 200 block of Thomas Street around 6:15 p.m.

When police arrived, the subject came out of the residence, fired one round into the air and reentered the residence.

Stoneville police called for assistance from the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office.

The county has used its reverse 9-1-1 system to notify nearby residents to stay in their homes.

As of 8 p.m. deputies are working to lockdown the area and contain the situation. Negotiators are attempting to contact the man.

Sheriff Sam Page said officers may have to evacuate some of the homes in the area later this evening.
