CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. -- On a perfect day at Carolina Beach, a pair of surfers are back in the water together about a year after a shark attack put their student-teacher bond to the ultimate test.

Then 10-year-old Cassandra Calloway, of Forsyth County, was taking her first set of surf lessons from instructor Barbara Corey at Holden Beach.

During the lessons, Corey was attacked by a shark. Calloway and Corey's bond strengthened as Corey went through her long recovery process.

Now back in the water, this is a big weekend for Calloway and Corey. Calloway will be competing in a big surfing contest at Carolina Beach and Corey doesn't plan on missing it.

Calloway admits it was a little hard to get back in the water at first after the attack, but said Corey inspired her.
