Daughter, boyfriend arrested after woman’s body found in suitcase

CHICAGO — A summer vacation in Indonesia ended in murder for a woman from the Chicago area. The woman’s teenage daughter and her boyfriend are in custody overseas.

62-year-old Sheila Von Weise-Mack’s body was found stuffed in a suitcase in Bali. Her 19-year-old daughter Heather Mack and her 21-year-old boyfriend Tommy Schaeffer are in police custody in Bali.

They are accused of leaving a bloodied suitcase in the back of a cab Tuesday that was parked outside their hotel.

They said they would be right back, but took off instead. Two hours later, inside the suitcase, the driver found the badly beaten body of Sheila.

When detectives later caught up with the couple who’ve known each other since their days at Oak Park River Forest High School, they say they had been attacked by an armed gang who killed Sheila, but they escaped. Police in Bali do not believe their story.

Mrs. Von Weise-Mack is a woman with an interesting literary background. She has worked with the likes of Senator Ted Kennedy and famed Chicago writer Studs Terkel. Her husband was James Mack, a noteworthy jazz composer and producer who died in 2006.

Life since then has been turbulent in their Oak Park home, even violent. , WGN News is told, the mother and daughter fought verbally and physically over the years–often requiring police presence.

That strained relationship still percolating even as they vacationed in Bali this week.

Charges are pending.
