WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Police responded to a motel in Winston-Salem early Tuesday morning after reports of multiple shots being fired into one of the rooms.
Shots were fired into Room 309 at the Budget Inn on Peters Creek Parkway around 3:24 a.m. The man inside the room says there were fourteen in total. The majority of which came through their window and ended up lodged in the wall of his room.
"Me and my girlfriend were laying down and heard like four hard knocks at the door," said the man, who wished to remain unidentified.
He says his girlfriend asked who it was at the door and when she did that, the shooting began.
"After they started shooting she got down. I got down and I crawled to the bathroom. She was stuck in the corner, she flipped the mattress over," said the man, who described the ordeal as "hell on wheels."
The event was traumatizing for many neighboring residents, too. Many of the rooms are filled with other couples and families who are staying at the hotel long-term.
"I just keep hearing all of these gunshots. It sounded like it was at my front door actually, because it was so loud," said one neighbor, who didn't want his face on camera, but identified himself as the man who called 911. "I was wondering if something was getting ready to come through my door, if it was going to come through my own vehicle, is it [going to] come through the window that I'm at. You know [I was] terrified."
The male victim said he had no idea who would have known he was staying in the room. He believes it was a random shooting. If that's the case, it's a thought which leaves the man who called 911 in a heightened state of fear.
"It could have been me, it could have been anybody. You know, and I don't wish that upon anybody," said the caller.
FOX8 was not able to reach Winston-Salem police for comment on the random shooting theory.
A report released by police said they discovered that three men wearing masks fired several shots through the window of the motel room. The suspects then fled on foot.
Nobody was injured as a result of the shooting.
FOX8 spoke with hotel management, who declined to provide an official comment regarding the shooting.
