HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — A whale had to be put to death after it was attacked by a shark last Saturday,  according to Hilton Head Beach Services.

WTOC is reporting that a lifeguard saw a Pygmy Sperm Whale being attacked and then it washed ashore.

A veterinarian was called to the scene, but the whale could not be saved and it was euthanized.

The shark sighting prompted the beaches to be closed for 30 minutes. The shark was not spotted again.
