Man arrested after spending the night inside Asheboro grocery store eating, drinking and smoking

ASHEBORO, N.C. — A man was arrested after police say he hid in a grocery store and spent the night eating, drinking and smoking.

According to the Courier-Tribune, the manager of Just Save on North Fayetteville Street, said someone was inside the store when he opened Monday morning.

The man was standing at the front door ready to leave.

Police watched surveillance video which showed the man taking a box of cookies into the men’s bathroom at 10 p.m. and hiding until the store closed.

He was later seen walking around the store, eating food off the shelf, drinking beer and soda, and smoking cigarettes. He also stole sunglasses, candy bars, display cell phones and prepaid cards.

Michael Howard Starkey, 42, no permanent address, is charged with larceny and possession of stolen goods.

He was placed in the Randolph County Jail.
