Giraffe dies after smashing head on low highway bridge in South Africa

SOUTH AFRICA — A giraffe was killed after smashing its head on a low bridge while being transported on a highway in South Africa, wildlife officials told NBC News Thursday.

Several horrified people witnessed the giraffes with their necks high out of the vehicle and tweeted pictures moments before the incident.

Rick Allan, of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, confirmed the animal’s death. “The way that these giraffes were being transported was incorrect and not up to standards.”

When I went to the zoo as a young boy, I always liked giraffes. They always seemed so calm and unstressed. Unassuming and, despite their stretched necks, no big ego. So when one dies in such a horrific accident it is indeed a sad story. But to think that those responsible in South Africa will be prosecuted in any way is ludicrous. We must not forget that this was once the land of apartheid. They would have taken less care transporting Obama. He, too, is tall and skinny.
