Man accused of taking young child on NC armed robbery

CONCORD, N.C. — Police are searching for a man who took his child along for a robbery, according to WSOC-TV.

The victim said he was at the intersection of Church Street and Lake Concord Road Wednesday, stopped at the light when he was approached by a man with a young boy.

“He was probably 5 or 6,” Joseph Mills said.

The man told him they just needed to go to Walmart. The victim said he would never pick up a hitchhiker but he saw how young the boy was in the heat of the day.

“I figured Walmart wasn’t that far,” Mills said. “I tried to be a good Samaritan.”

But that’s when his good deed turned into a robbery.

“He proceeds to pull out a knife and puts it on his lap, and says ‘Yeah, I’m going to need your wallet,’” Mills said.

Mills said he knew better than to resist and soon they were at Walmart. The robber and the child rushed out the car door with his tablet and $1,000 cash. People who live and work in the area were calling the crime shameful.

“If it is his child, look what kind of role model this child has,” Teresa Efird said. “Yeah, I hope they get him. And if it’s his child, I hope that child is taken away.”

The victim wants the same thing.

“I think it’s pretty despicable,” Mills said. “I have a 4-year-old son myself.”

The robber is described as a white man between 30 and 35 years old. He was wearing jeans, work boots and a Miami Heat ball cap. If you have any information about the crime you’re urged to call police.
