WAUKESHA, Wis. — A 12-year-old girl stabbed 19 times by classmates last May has received many cards and gifts.
But one was quite a surprise.
As the girl recovers from her wounds, family members asked the public to send her hearts that were purple, which is her favorite color.
On Tuesday, a military Purple Heart award arrived in the mail.
Parents said the gift was given anonymously with a card that read, "The only heart I could find -- Be strong."
Police say the girl was lured into the woods and stabbed 19 times on May 31 by two classmates trying to impress an online character known as the Slender Man.
Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, both 12, are charged as adults with first-degree attempted homicide.
"Her physical wounds, thankfully, are healing more quickly than anticipated and her pain is decreasing daily," the family said in a statement. "For that, we are so grateful."
A GoFundMe fundraising site has collected more than $50,000 to help pay for the girl's medical and legal bills.
