NC mother arrested after newborn found buried in backyard
FRANKLIN COUNTY, N.C. — A mother was arrested Tuesday after her newborn was found buried in her backyard on June 29.
WTVD reported that the teen mom had already made bond by Tuesday afternoon.
Ashley Marie Reed, 16, is charged with class I felony of concealing the birth of a child.
Her father called the sheriff’s office in June saying he found the body of a full-term 8.5 pound baby girl wrapped in a brown bag and buried in a shallow grave behind their house in the Fox Ridge subdivision. They said they didn’t know their daughter was pregnant.
Franklin County Sheriff Jerry Jones said a preliminary autopsy showed the newborn’s umbilical cord was cut too closely and the baby likely bled to death.
The baby’s father, 18-year-old Aaron Davis said he wishes he had spoken up about the pregnancy sooner and maybe all of this could have been prevented.
He and the young mother later named their daughter Emma. They gave her a proper burial at a funeral home in Zebulon.
